Corporate Sustainability Reporting Questionnaire
Introduction and Framework
This Questionnaire is designed to help you prepare your Sustainability Strategy and the related Sustainability Reports as requested for example by the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
It comprises six pages for six "Topics of Impact", plus one introductory and one closing page. The topics are:
1) CLIMATE CRISIS 2) BIODIVERSITY LOSS (incl. Forests and Soils), WATER & MARINE LIFE 3) MATERIALS, WASTE & CIRCULAR ECONOMY 4) POLLUTION 5) WELL-BEING (SOCIAL) 6) POLITICAL STABILITY (GOVERNMENT)
On each of these six topics, the questionnaire is based on the principle of so-called "double materiality", which means that it includes "Inside-Out"-Assessments (impact of your business on these topics) as well as "Outside-In"-Assessements (risks of these topics to your business).
The questionnaire identifies 4 "spheres of agency" with an "Inside-Out"-Materiality on every topic:
1) BUSINESS MODELS (how your products & services determine the impact of your customers) 2) FOOTPRINT (your own negative impact) 3) REGENERATION (your own positive impact) 4) HANDPRINT (your non-material impact on the system as a whole)
It also identifies one "sphere of agency" with an "Outside-In"-Materiality, where you need to assess and respond to the FINANCIAL RISKS TO YOUR BUSINESS posed by these six topics. More details are given within the questions.
The questionnaire will ask you about your 1) Current Status, 2) Targets, and 3) Measures with regard to all 30 (5 by 6) spheres of agency for every topic. It will also ask you to rate the quality of your data. Rough estimates are legitimate, but they must be made transparent, and should be improved over time.
The quality of your strategy and of your report should later be assessed (both by you and externally) against the criteria:
1) QUALITY & TRANSPARENCY OF DATA 2) LEVEL OF AMBITION OF TARGETS 3) CONSISTENCY OF MEASURES WITH TARGETS 4) COMPREHENSIVENESS OF YOUR APPROACH 5) GOVERNANCE OF YOUR EXECUTION 6) COMMUNICATION
The questionnaire therefore also includes questions about the Governance and the Communication of your Sustainability Strategy and its translation into action. The entire questionnaire thus consists of 136 questions in total. If you work with estimates only, as a starting point, the questionnaire will take a few hours to complete. If you try to collect thorough data on as many questions as possible, it will take a few weeks, or even months.
All data collected in this survey will be kept anonymous and will only be evaluated on a statistical basis, hence no individual responses can be tracked. Your own results will of course be communicated back to you. By participating in this survey, you agree that the data may be collected, used and analyzed in this way.
